Kansas City Chiefs Could Cut This Polarizing Playmaker
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

Like the other 31 teams in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs will need to make some tough roster decisions in the coming months.

At some point this offseason, the Chiefs will need to trim their roster to 53 players, which means some surprising cuts may happen.

Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon is already predicting that Kansas City will end up cutting wide receiver Kadarius Toney.

The Chiefs acquired Toney in a midseason trade with the New York Giants in October 2022, but Toney’s stay in Kansas City has mostly been disastrous thus far.

He played in seven games with the Chiefs in 2022, logging 14 catches for 171 yards and a couple of touchdowns. He certainly flashed potential, but the consistency just wasn’t there.

Then, this past season, Toney was expected to have a larger role in Kansas City, and it appeared that the Chiefs were willing to give it to him early on.

However, a bunch of dropped passes and numerous mental mistakes over the course of the year cost Toney a spot in the rotation. He ended up catching 27 passes for 169 yards and a score in 2023 and ultimately expressed some displeasure about his diminished role.

The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Florida, was selected by the Giants with the 20th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

He appeared in 10 contests during his rookie campaign, hauling in 39 receptions for 420 yards and demonstrating considerable promise.

But, his inability to stay healthy and his behavioral issues resulted in the Giants sending him to the Chiefs for a couple of draft picks, including a third-rounder.

It seems safe to say that is one deal Kansas City lost.

Even with the Chiefs struggling to get production out of their wide receivers last season, Toney was still unable to carve out a niche, which tells us everything we need to know about what head coach Andy Reid thinks of him.

Of course, Toney is still young, so there is time for him to iron things out, but it may not come on Kansas City’s watch.

The Chiefs signed Marquise Brown in free agency and drafted University of Texas standout Xavier Worthy, pushing Toney even further down the depth chart.

Toney may end up getting released in the coming months.
